Dulux Avista Decorative Flakes are a pigmented polymer flakes individually coloured of various shape and sizes, that are blended together to create a premium finish on concrete surfaces.
Application Tools
Air Spray, Airless Spray
Combustible
If Decorative Flakes are used externally, a slip resistant Dulux Avista Slip Resistant Additive or Dulux Avista Slip Reducing Crushed Glass is required.
Surface to be prepared following the process outlined in the Dulux Avista Waterbased Epoxy TDS.
Dulux Avista Decorative Flakes are to be applied into second coat of Dulux Avista Waterbased Epoxy, while wet. Refer to waterbased epoxy TDS for mixing & application instructions.
Applying Decorative Flakes (Full Flake)
Remove flakes from box and place in a suitable clean, dry bucket.
Epoxy must have adequate film build for flake to adhere to (quality 22mm nap roller recommended). Do not allow to dry prior to applying flake. It is suggested to complete this step in manageable sections, by rolling approximately 5-10m² of epoxy and applying flake whilst area is still wet. Immediately after applying epoxy coating and while coating is still wet, walk out on the job wearing spiked shoes and evenly sprinkle the dry flake over the surface.
Evenly sprinkle the flakes from an open flat palm with fingers spread. Move hand back and forth allowing the flakes to fall evenly while the surface is still tacky. Ensure a full and even coverage.
Applying Decorative Flakes (Partial or Terrazzo Look)
Remove flakes from box and place in a suitable clean, dry bucket.
Epoxy must have adequate film build for flake to adhere to (quality 22mm nap roller recommended). Do not allow to dry prior to applying flake. It is suggested to complete this step in manageable sections, by rolling approximately 5-10m² of epoxy and applying flake whilst area is still wet. Immediately after applying epoxy coating and while coating is still wet, walk out on the job wearing spiked. Collect a small amount of flake in the palm of the hand & throw up high, to allow the flake to spread & fall randomly. If more flake is required, this can be gently sprinkled where required. For best results, try to avoid dropping flakes in clumps, as this can leave an undesirable appearance.
Note: Two-person application (one cutting & rolling, one flaking) recommended for both finishes for best results.
Allow epoxy to cure for a minimum of 6 hours (allow longer in cooler conditions).
Broom and discard excess flake and vacuum thoroughly.
Note: A partial flake does not require sanding.
Surface must be sealed with one of the following products: Refer to relevant TDS for application details.
- Dulux Avista Polyurethane Sealer
- Dulux Avista 2 Pack Urethane Sealer
- Dulux Avista Polyaspartic Sealer
Note: Additional sanding can be completed between sealer coats for a smoother finish. If a higher slip resistance is required, sanding may not be necessary. For external surfaces, use of Dulux Avista Crushed Glass Slip Additive is recommended to increase the slip resistance.
