Thorough stirring of Design Rust Effect is recommended. Failure to do so may result in a finish with dark patches where little to no rusting will develop with the application of Rust Solution. Thinning of Dulux Design Rust Effect is not recommended
Dulux Design Rust Effect is a chemical reaction. Individual results may vary due to film thickness, methods used, time elapsed, ambient temperatures, substrate etc. Dulux Design Rust effect paint will continue to rust after initial application. The liberal application of Dulux Rust Solution and Water (in Step 2) on a vertical surface may cause the excess to run down the surface. If these runs or drip marks are not desired, keep a brush handy and use random brush strokes to immediately get rid of the runs.
On exterior surfaces rust stains (caused by rain run-off) may appear on adjacent surfaces such as paving. To prevent these stains we recommend finishing with 1 coat of Dulux Design Clear Top Coat. The clear coat may increase sheen level and darken the effect. Do not apply in high humidity.
On a day of around 25ºC the paint finish will be touch dry in 2 hours and ready for re-coat in 12 hours. In cooler or humid conditions allow longer drying times. Temperature must be above 10ºC and below 30ºC during application and drying.
Care of new paint work: Avoid exposure to rain and condensation for 48 hours after final coat is applied.
Repainting over Dulux Design Rust: Should you wish to change or touch up the paint finish please contact Dulux Customer Service for advice.
Rust Solution: Contains1-<10% Ammonium Chloride; 1-<10% Copper Salts.
Rust Base Paint and Rust Solution must be kept out of reach of children.
Dulux Design Rust can be applied over previously painted surfaces that are in good condition. For optimum appearance, a smooth surface free of defects is required. Lightly sand any glossy finishes. Clean marked walls by washing with sugar soap and rinse with water. Apply one coat of Dulux 1 Step Acrylic Primer Sealer & Undercoat to any areas which have been repaired, have an uneven gloss level.
Unpainted Surfaces:
Bare Paperfaced Wallboard, Cement, Brick: Brush down to remove any surface dust. Apply one coat of Dulux 1 Step Acrylic Primer Sealer & Undercoat.
Bare Set Plaster, Fibrous Plaster, Plasterglass: Brush down to remove any surface dust. Apply one coat of Dulux Sealer Binder.
Metal: Degrease thoroughly. Apply one coat of Dulux All Metal Primer
Stir thoroughly prior to use with a broad flat paddle using an up and down scooping action. Stir for at least 1 minute to ensure even distribution of the iron particles.
Before you begin, test your chosen application method on a large piece of board.
Step 1
Apply 2 coats of Dulux Rust Effect with a wide brush using random brush strokes. Do not roll or spray. Allow minimum 12hours dry time between coats.
Step 2
Allow Rust Effect to dry for 12hours prior to applying Dulux Rust Effect Solution. Apply 2 coats of Dulux Rust Effect Solution with a wide brush using random brush strokes. To accelerate the rusting effect, lightly spray (do not saturate) the surface with water immediately after the Rust solution is applied. Repeat the water spraying 2-3 times during the drying period. Allow minimum 8hours dry time between coats.
Step 3
Rust residue may be rubbed off when touched. On exterior surfaces the rust effect will continue to develop over time. Rust run-off may stain adjacent surfaces. To avoid rub-off and run-off seal with one coat of Dulux Design Clear Top Coat. Note that a clear coat will change the appearance of the rust effect.
