Visible brushstrokes are a characteristic of pearlescent paints and it is for this reason that we do not recommend application with a paint roller. Do not apply in high humidity, below 10°c or above 30°c.
Pre-painted surfaces in good condition, in a white or off white colour, do not need a primer coat. Lightly sand any satin or glossy painted surfaces to a flat finish before painting. Clean and dust off walls. Previously painted walls in mid tone and dark colours, apply 1 or 2 coats Porter’s Prepare & Prime, allow 2 hours dry time before overcoating. On new unpainted timber, sand smooth and dust down, and apply 1 or 2 coats Porter’s Prepare & Prime. Allow 2 hours dry time before overcoating. On new unpainted plasterboard sheeting spot prime all joints then apply by brush, roller or spray 1 or 2 coats Porter’s Prepare & Prime. Allow 2 hours dry time before overcoating. On bare masonry surfaces such as, render or brick, spot prime all repaired areas with Porter’s Limeproof Undercoat Sealer, then apply 1 coat of same to entire area by brush, medium nap roller or spray. Touch dry in 1 hour. Allow 6 hours dry time before re-coating or over-coating.
Do not apply paint if Relative Humidity is above 85% or temperature is within 3°C of Dew Point. Do not apply if the surface temperature is greater than 30°C or below 10°C, or likely to fall below 10°C during the application or drying period. By Brush – may be applied in a random brush finish, or a smooth dragged finish. For a random brush finish, apply two coats using a “crows feet” brushing technique, cutting in progressively. For a smooth dragged finish, apply paint in a vertical direction, cutting in progressively, then with a dry brush lay off over finished work while paint is still wet to achieve an even appearance. Do not “picture frame” a wall, cutting in should be completed progressively. Touch dry 3 hours. Re-coat in 12 hours. Allow 12 hours dry time. By Spray – Best results are achieved using a HVLP (high volume, low pressure) air spray. When spraying paint may be thinned with water to a maximum of 5%. Two coats recommended. Touch dry 3 hours. Re-coat in 12 hours. Allow 12 hours dry time. Application tip – There is another application method that eliminates brush strokes and gives a beautiful mother-of pearl finish. Paint on the first coat by brush or spray as above. Allow 12 hours dry time. For the second coat two people are needed. The first person paints on the Duchess Satin, using a “crows feet” brushing technique, cutting in progressively, and the second person follows closely behind “ragging” the paint with muslin cloth. Do not go back over completed work. Do not stop in the middle of a wall. All work should be arranged to allow completion at a natural division such as a corner. Touch dry 3 hours. Allow 12 hours dry time.
