Feast Watson Traditional Timber Oil is a deep penetrating oil for a classic finish on decking and exterior timber. Traditional Timber Oil protects timber against the destructive effects of weather and mould growth. The added eucalyptus oil naturally dissolves gum residue and grease, ensuring an even finish. Traditional Timber Oil is a warm natural colour which can be tinted to highlight the character of timber species. Traditional Timber Oil weathers naturally and will not crack or peel and is ideal for use on all exterior timber including decking, steps, fences, gates, posts and beams.
Application Tools
Spray, Brush, Roller, Pad
Do not apply this product in temperatures below 10°C or above 35°C, or when rain or heavy dew is expected during the drying period.
In hot temperatures, do not apply in direct sunlight and coat in the shade.
Weathered Timber
Prepare weathered or grey timber by cleaning thoroughly with WOODCLEAN™ as per the instructions. Sanding may be required to remove stains and restore deteriorated surfaces. Remove all sanding dust before coating.
Previously Coated Timber
Timber coated with stain or oil can be coated with TRADITIONAL TIMBER OIL after the surface has weathered. Test if the surface is ready by sprinkling water onto the timber: if the water absorbs into the timber, it is suitable for coating. If the water beads, further weathering, sanding or stripping is required. Painted or varnished surfaces need to be taken back to bare timber by stripping or sanding. Prepare timber for coating with WOODCLEAN as per the instructions.
New, Pre-Oiled Timber
Timber that is factory pre-oiled with Feast Watson Industrial Timber Oil or Intergrain Universal Timber Oil does not require exterior weathering or treatment to remove tannin or oils. This pre-oiled timber can be directly over coated with Feast Watson Traditional Timber Oil. All timber should be clean and free from dust, dirt, debris, and mortar prior to coating. Light surface soiling: A light wipe down with a clean damp cloth will be suitable. Heavy surface soiling: Clean the surface with WOODCLEAN as per the instructions.
New, Raw Timber
Allow new Treated Pine to weather for 2 weeks prior to application or follow timber manufacturer’s recommendation. Allow other timbers to weather for approximately 4-6 weeks. We recommend that tannin rich timbers are regularly hosed with water to assist leaching during this time. Weathering periods are provided as a guide only, consult your timber supplier to ensure you correctly prepare your timber for your particular requirements.
Allow the timber to dry completely before applying Traditional Timber Oil.
Traditional Timber Oil should be stirred thoroughly before and during application with a flat blade stirrer taking care not to introduce bubbles.
If the job requires more than one can of oil, mix all together in one large container prior to commencing.
Apply one flood coat of Traditional Timber Oil using a brush, roller, spray or lambswool applicator. If applying with a roller or spray, back brush the coating to ensure even penetration. Work along 3-4 planks at a time, in the direction of the grain. Ensure edges and end grain are fully coated.
Allow to penetrate into the timber for 30-60 minutes, then wipe off excess product with dry applicator or cloth before surface becomes tacky.
Allow to dry for a further 60 minutes.
Apply a second coat as above, allow to penetrate for 30-60 minutes and again wipe off excess with dry applicator or cloth before surface becomes tacky.
WIPING EXCESS IS NECESSARY TO ENSURE AN EVEN FINISH.
For a longer lasting finish, a third coat may be applied after 1 hour to the same method as above.
Allow to dry for 18 hours before light foot traffic.
Maintenance
Regularly monitor coated timber for signs of colour loss, dryness and weathering. Recoat the timber when it begins to show signs of dryness to help maintain its natural beauty and protection.
When required, clean the surface using Woodclean, allow the surface to dry and recoat with one coat of Traditional Timber Oil. Wipe excess after 30 - 60 minutes to ensure an even finish.
For a longer lasting finish, a second coat may be applied after 1 hour.
