Intergrain Universal™ Timber Oil is an oil based coating designed to protect and nourish all timber species from within. The deeply penetrating*, clear finish will never flake, blister or peel^ and helps prevent warping, cupping and splitting. Intergrain Universal Timber Oil will allow the timber to gradually fade over time to a natural grey or can be tinted using Intergrain Colour Additive for a longer lasting finish.

New pre-oiled timber (with Intergrain Universal Timber Oil or Feast Watson Industrial Timber Oil)
Timber that is factory pre-oiled with Intergrain Universal Timber Oil or Feast Watson Industrial Timber Oil does not require exterior weathering or treatment to remove tannin or oils. This pre-oiled timber can be directly recoated with Intergrain Universal Timber Oil.
All timber should be clean and free from dust, dirt, debris, and mortar prior to coating.
Light surface soiling: A light wipe down with a clean damp cloth will be suitable.
Heavy surface soiling: Clean the surface with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner following the directions on the pack and rinse, allowing the surface to dry thoroughly prior to topcoat application.
IMPORTANT
Prior to topcoat purchase and application, it is important to identify the type of oil the supplier or timber merchant has used. If unsure, follow the recommendations below for New Raw Timber.
New pre-oiled timber (mineral oil)
All timber should be clean and free from dust, dirt, debris, and mortar prior to coating.
Clean the surface with Intergrain Tannin and Oil Remover followed by Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner following the pack directions and rinse, allowing the surface to dry thoroughly prior to topcoat application.
New raw timber
All timber should be clean and free from dust, dirt, debris, and mortar prior to coating. Clean the surface with Intergrain Tannin and Oil Remover followed by Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner following the pack directions and rinse, allowing the surface to dry thoroughly prior to topcoat application.
Rejuvenating weathered, grey timber back to natural colour
Clean with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner. For severely weathered timber, sand back to a fresh surface, remove all sanding dust, then clean with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner.
Existing oiled coating in poor condition
Remove coating by using a combination of Intergrain UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover and power washing. Then clean with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner.
Paints, varnishes or coatings in varied condition
Paints, varnishes or coatings that have deteriorated unevenly, remove all existing coating by using a Intergrain Liquid 8 Timber Stripper or sanding back to bare timber. Then clean with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner.
Maintain bare grey/weathered timber
Do not use a timber cleaner, ensure surface is clean by washing with water.
Important:
If mould is present or if timber is in a mould prone area, use Intergrain UltraPrep Mould Killer to remove surface mould effectively as the first step of preparing the timber for coating. For best results, we recommend cleaning timber with Intergrain UltraPrep™ Timber Cleaner to ensure surface is free from debris, droppings and stains.
For best performance, apply at least 1 coat to all sides of the timber prior to installation.
Remove excess water from the surface and allow timber to thoroughly dry before coating.
Stir Intergrain Universal Timber Oil thoroughly before and during use with a flat blade stirrer.
Optional: For a longer lasting finish, add Intergrain Colour Additive in your selected colour. Stir thoroughly to incorporate colour evenly.
- Add 40ml Colour Additive to tint 1L of Universal Timber Oil
- Add 1 x Colour Additive to tint 5L of Universal Timber Oil
- Add 2 x Colour Additive to tint 10L of Universal Timber Oil
When using two different tinted cans of the same colour, it is recommended that the product be mixed together in the same container.
NOTE: Final colour depends on a number of factors including raw timber colour, porosity and application rate. Always test colour in an inconspicuous area before completing your project.
Apply Intergrain Universal Timber Oil generously using the Intergrain Deckbrush™ (recommended), flat deck applicator, paint brush, roller or spray (air assisted airless or airless). Back brush to help even penetration. Ensure edges and end grain are fully coated.
Allow oil to penetrate for 30-60 minutes before wiping off any excess with a dry applicator or cloth.
Allow to dry for 24 hours, then apply second coat following same application process as first coat.
Important: All timber is required to be free from dust, mould and site contaminants prior to coating. Follow all relevant product label instructions when using Intergrain products.
Maintenance
Maintenance time varies widely according to many factors including the age and porosity of the wood, species, situation and exposure to the weather.
Intergrain Universal Timber Oil should be reapplied when the timber has lost its water resistance and water is soaking into the timber. We recommend routine maintenance inspections every 6 months to ensure the timber is still protected from water.
Overcoating
Intergrain Universal Timber Oil may be overcoated with any Intergrain water-based or oil-based product, such as Intergrain Ultradeck Timber Oil, Intergrain Ultradeck Timber Stain, Intergrain Heavy Duty or Intergrain Nature’s Timber Oil. There’s no need to sand back or strip Intergrain Universal Timber Oil before overcoating - simply refer to and apply in accordance with the instructions for the relevant Intergrain water-based or oil-based product.
