Application Tools
Brush, Other
Test colour on an off-cut or inconspicuous area prior to staining the whole job to ensure satisfaction with colour choice. Colour can be varied by mixing Prooftint colours and adding Prooftint Colour Reducer. Note: The dwell time before wiping excess, and the finishing clear coat will impact the final colour.
Drying times are given at 25°C and 50% relative humidity. Lower temperatures or higher humidity can lead to extended drying times. Do not apply in temperatures under 10°C or above 35°C.
Previously Coated Timber
Previously coated surfaces need to be sanded back to bare timber. Remove all sanding dust before staining.
New Timber
Sand to a smooth surface and remove all sanding dust before coating. To achieve a super-smooth finish or if the timber grain is open or coarse, apply a coat of Feast Watson Sanding Sealer and sand back as per the directions.
Seal soft porous timbers, such as Pine, Meranti and Cedar with Feast Watson Timber Primer or another suitable primer to ensure even absorption into the timber.

For Small Areas
For small and detailed areas, apply Prooftint stain directly to the surface in the direction of the grain, by either brush or rag. Wipe off after 2-5 minutes depending on the depth of colour required.
Allow to dry, then seal with Feast Watson Clear Varnish as per the label instructions.
For Large Areas
For large areas including floors, dilute Prooftint in Prooftint Colour Reducer which will give more working time to distribute the stain evenly. Apply with a rag, brush or Feast Watson Floor Finish Applicator in the direction of the grain. Wipe off excess after a period of time determined by the desired colour intensity. Allow to dry, then seal with an appropriate clear coating as per the label instructions, for example Feast Watson Floorclear or Feast Watson Timber Floor Wax.
