About Intergrain UltraPrep Sealer & Primer

Intergrain UltraPrep™ Sealer & Primer is a high performance sealer and primer formulated to be compatible with all Intergrain waterbased top coats. Intergrain UltraPrep Sealer & Primer seals bare and coated timber surfaces, locking in any previous water or oil based timber coating and allowing the application of any Intergrain water based coating over the top. Intergrain UltraPrep Sealer & Primer will also extend the life of any Intergrain water based top coat when applied underneath.

Precautions and limitations

The final look of any semi-transparent top coat will be impacted by the condition and colour of the existing coating. If the existing coating has deteriorated unevenly, it is recommended to remove all existing coating by using a coatings stripper or sanding back to bare timber. Then clean with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner.

All timber is required to be free from dust, mould and site contaminants prior to coating. Follow all relevant product label instructions when using Intergrain products.

Do not apply to hot surfaces or those in direct sunlight, as doing so will result in difficult application, poor adhesion and blistering.

Do not apply in temperatures above 35°C or below 10°C or if rain or dew is expected within four hours of application. Lightly dampening timber before painting will ease application in temperatures above 28°C.

The instructions below offer general preparation guidelines. For larger projects, commercial jobs or for more specific information please contact our Help & Advice team.

Coating over an exisiting coating
Note: Existing coating must be at least 30 days old. Treat surface with Intergrain UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover and power washing. Then clean with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner. Important: The final look of any semi-transparent top coat will be impacted by the condition and colour of the existing coating. New timber
Treat timber with Intergrain UltraPrep Tannin & Oil Remover. Then clean with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner.

New feature timber such as doors and windows
Sand timber to a uniform, smooth surface. Ensure timber is dry and free from all dirt, dust, wax and oils. Note: Do not use steel wool on timber as severe staining will occur.

Grey and weathered with no previous coating
Clean with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner. For severely weathered timber, sand back to a fresh surface, remove all sanding dust, then clean with Intergrain UltraPrep Timber Cleaner.

Important: If mould is present or if timber is in a mould prone area, use Intergrain UltraPrep Mould Killer to remove surface mould effectively as the first step of preparing the timber for coating.

How to apply
Brush, Roller

Remove excess water from the surface and allow the timber to dry for at least 1 hour before coating. If coating over an existing coating, surface must be allowed to completely dry. Stir Intergrain UltraPrep Sealer & Primer thoroughly before and during use with a flat blade stirrer. Do not thin.

Apply Intergrain UltraPrep Sealer & Primer using the Intergrain DeckBrush™ (recommended), flat deck applicator, paint brush, roller or spray (air assisted airless or airless).

Apply at the correct application rate (see coverage). Do not overspread or apply thinly as insufficient film thickness will result in lap marks and compromise performance and durability. When coating large areas, work in sections, apply long strokes and use natural breaksin the boards as stopping points. If spraying or applying by roller, it is recommended to back brush to even out the finish and avoid spotting. Allow to dry for at least 4 hours before applying any Intergrain water based top coat.

Maintenance
Apply Intergrain UltraPrep Sealer & Primer every 3 months until a top coat is applied over the top.
