This guide walks applicators through the essential pre-job checklist to ensure a smooth and durable coating application on metal and commercial roofs. Start every job with confidence, follow the guide and deliver results that last.
Every roof in Australia is different. Please follow this simple guide to ensure you have the correct products to deliver the best possible roof restoration.
Glazed terracotta tiles are extremely slippery and the utmost care must be taken when walking on them, the use of anti slip shoes is recommended. Terracotta tiles are extremely delicate and are prone to shattering, extreme care is required when walking on them.
Prior to restoration disconnect downpipes which are connected to rainwater tanks or direct water into garden bed or lawn. Following the coating application leave downpipes disconnected for at least two significant rains or wash the roof after three weeks of curing.
Cut a small cross hatch through existing paint with sharp blade. Press cellulose tape firmly across cut and rip tape off. If paint comes off, it is unsound and should be removed. Repeat test at random across painted surface to test soundness of area.

Remove chalky deposits such as degraded coating or white rust (zinc corrosion products) with a power tool fitted with an abrasive nylon pad or cup brush. Remove red rust if present by power tool cleaning in accordance with AS1627.2 to clean, bright metal.

After the roof has been correctly prepared, complete the system with two coats of Dulux Acratex Roof Membrane. Choose the finish that best suits the desired appearance.

Allow the roof surface to completely dry between 1st and 2nd pressure wash, prior to the application of new coatings. Any remaining paint film should be checked using the cross hatch adhesion test to determine if coating is sound prior to coating – Refer to data sheet for full details.
¹A previously painted roof can be re-coated. However, due to the variable nature and adhesion of the existing coating, Dulux Acratex will not provide a warranty on our products when applied to a previously painted substrate.
²It is the responsibility of the contractor, prior to applying the products, to ensure that the roof is properly prepared in accordance with relevant Dulux Acratex specifications. Failure to properly prepare the surface may impact the coating system’s performance.
