Get it right from the start with Dulux® Acratex®
Designed for professional applicators, this guide outlines the key preparation, treatment and coating requirements for concrete tile, terracotta tile and metal roofs to help achieve consistent application and long-lasting performance.
Every roof in Australia is different. Please follow this simple guide to ensure you have the correct products to deliver the best possible roof restoration.
Glazed terracotta tiles are extremely slippery and the utmost care must be taken when walking on them, the use of anti slip shoes is recommended. Terracotta tiles are extremely delicate and are prone to shattering, extreme care is required when walking on them.
Prior to restoration disconnect downpipes which are connected to rainwater tanks or direct water into garden bed or lawn. Following the coating application leave downpipes disconnected for at least two significant rains or wash the roof after three weeks of curing.
Cut a small cross hatch through existing paint with sharp blade. Press cellulose tape firmly across cut and rip tape off. If paint comes off, it is unsound and should be removed. Repeat test at random across painted surface to test soundness of area.
Replace any cracked, chipped or faulty tiles, reset any displaced tiles and ridge capping, and rebed where required. Check valley irons for corrosion or rust and replace as required.
High-pressure wash with a minimum of 4000+ PSI and a flow of 15-23 litres per minute with a turbo head/nozzle to remove dirt, excess grime, lichen, moss and other contaminants.
¹PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES: High-pressure wash with a minimum of 4000+ PSI at 15-23 litres per minute with a turbo head/nozzle to achieve a satisfactory clean surface before application commences. Multiple passes may be required to effectively remove previous coatings.
Repoint using Dulux Acratex Roof Pointing.
Fungal & algae spoilage must be completely destroyed before re-coating by using Dulux Acratex PrepTreat.
Apply it and allow a minimum of two hours to dry.
Note: Dulux Acratex PrepTreat is suitable to leave on your roof substrate - no further washing required.

Sound, Weathered Terracotta Roof Tiles
For uncoated, sound, weathered glazed or unglazed terracotta roof tiles, prepare the surface with Acratex Roof Primer Terracotta.
Preferred Finish:
Roof Membrane Gloss (2 Coats)
Roof Membrane Satin (2 Coats)
Note: This system is not suitable for aged or crumbling terracotta roof tiles. Roofs with significant deterioration should be repaired or replaced before any coating system is applied.
After the roof has been correctly prepared, complete the system with two coats of Dulux Acratex Roof Membrane. Choose the finish that best suits the desired appearance.

Allow the roof surface to completely dry between 1st and 2nd pressure wash, prior to the application of new coatings. Any remaining paint film should be checked using the cross hatch adhesion test to determine if coating is sound prior to coating – Refer to data sheet for full details.
¹A previously painted roof can be re-coated. However, due to the variable nature and adhesion of the existing coating, Dulux Acratex will not provide a warranty on our products when applied to a previously painted substrate.
²It is the responsibility of the contractor, prior to applying the products, to ensure that the roof is properly prepared in accordance with relevant Dulux Acratex specifications. Failure to properly prepare the surface may impact the coating system’s performance.
